When the Gulf is choppy or the kids need a break from the waves, we point our guests toward the WaterColor Boathouse on Western Lake. It's flat, protected water right off 30A, and you can be paddling within minutes of pulling in.
What to expect out on Western Lake
Western Lake is a coastal dune lake, so the water sits glassy most mornings and paddling feels easy even if you've never stood on a board. We usually take a kayak or stand-up paddleboard the length of the lake, slip under the 30A bridge and coast toward the dunes where the lake nearly meets the Gulf.
The crew here walks you through where you can and can't go before you push off, and they're patient with first-timers getting in and out of a kayak. An hour is plenty for younger kids. Two gives you time to poke around the quieter fingers of the lake and watch for herons along the shoreline.
More than just paddling
The Boathouse Paddle Club also runs outdoor fitness classes, including TRX, bootcamp and their signature RUN/SUP workouts, plus fishing outings if you'd rather cast than cruise. And the little shop is worth a look even if you're not renting. They stock Vuori, Florence Marine, Goodr sunglasses and their own Boathouse gear.
Good to know before you book
Call or text ahead to reserve boards and kayaks, or book online. You don't need to be staying in WaterColor to paddle here, which surprises a lot of our guests. Bring a hat, sunscreen and a dry bag for your phone, then walk over to WaterColor's town center or head down to Seaside afterward for lunch.
Insider Tips
- We paddle in the morning. Western Lake is at its calmest before the afternoon breeze picks up, and it's a lot cooler.
- Don't skip the trip under the 30A bridge toward the dunes. That stretch where the dune lake nearly meets the Gulf is the best part and plenty of people turn around too soon.
- If you've never paddleboarded, we'd start on a kayak. The lake is flat enough that either works, but a kayak takes the pressure off.
- We tell families with young kids to book one hour and split it between two paddlers. The staff will help you swap at the dock.
- Pop into the shop even if you're not renting. It's one of our favorite spots along 30A for activewear and sunglasses.
- Reserve by phone or text before you come during summer weeks. Boards go quickly once the beach gets hot.
