Looking for one of the best nature spots on 30A? Camp Helen State Park offers a peaceful escape with scenic hiking trails, a rare coastal dune lake, beach access and a glimpse into Florida's history. Located between Inlet Beach and Panama City Beach, it's one of our favorite places to slow down and enjoy the natural beauty of the Emerald Coast.
What to expect during your visit to Camp Helen
Camp Helen State Park is home to Lake Powell, one of the world's few coastal dune lakes. From the main parking area, an easy walking trail leads beneath the highway overpass to the lake where you'll find calm water, towering sand dunes and beautiful Gulf views all in one place.
The walk to the beach is about three-quarters of a mile and takes you past historic buildings, a kayak launch and a fishing dock overlooking the unique mix of freshwater and saltwater. Along the way, you'll find interpretive signs sharing the history of Camp Helen and the wildlife that calls this protected area home.
Birdwatchers will want to keep an eye out for herons, egrets and the threatened Snowy Plover, which nests within the park. Throughout the year, park rangers also offer guided history and nature programs that provide a deeper look into one of 30A's most unique natural areas.
Good to know before you explore
Dogs are welcome throughout most of Camp Helen State Park but are not allowed on the beach or dune trail to help protect nesting Snowy Plovers. Picnic areas near the entrance make it easy to enjoy lunch before or after exploring.
If you're spending the day on the east end of 30A, Camp Helen pairs perfectly with a visit to nearby Inlet Beach or Rosemary Beach for shopping, dining or coffee after your hike.
Whether you're looking for hiking, wildlife viewing, kayaking or one of the best places to experience a coastal dune lake on 30A, Camp Helen State Park is well worth adding to your itinerary.
